THEME: THE TRANSFIGURATION OF JESUS CHRIST

Psalm 50:1-12, 2 Corinthians 3:12-18, Luke 9:28-36

Psalm 50:1-12 New International Version (NIV)

A psalm of Asaph.

The Mighty One, God, the Lord,
    speaks and summons the earth
    from the rising of the sun to where it sets.
From Zion, perfect in beauty,
    God shines forth.
Our God comes
    and will not be silent;
a fire devours before him,

    and around him a tempest rages.
He summons the heavens above,
    and the earth, that he may judge his people:
“Gather to me this consecrated people,
    who made a covenant with me by sacrifice.”
And the heavens proclaim his righteousness,
    for he is a God of justice.[a][b]

“Listen, my people, and I will speak;
    I will testify against you, Israel:
    I am God, your God.
I bring no charges against you concerning your sacrifices
    or concerning your burnt offerings, which are ever before me.
I have no need of a bull from your stall
    or of goats from your pens,
10 for every animal of the forest is mine,
    and the cattle on a thousand hills.
11 I know every bird in the mountains,
    and the insects in the fields are mine.
12 If I were hungry I would not tell you,
    for the world is mine, and all that is in it.

2 Corinthians 3:12-18  New International Version (NIV)

12 Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold. 13 We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to prevent the Israelites from seeing the end of what was passing away. 14 But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenantis read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away. 15 Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts.16 But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate[a] the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

Luke 9:28-36   New International Version (NIV)

The Transfiguration

28 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and Jameswith him and went up onto a mountain to pray. 29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. 30 Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. 31 They spoke about his departure,[a] which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.)

34 While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” 36 When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen.

  1. Luke 9:31 Greek exodos

Jesus went up the mountain to pray with His three closest Apostles. During that time Jesus was changed so that His face and clothing became dazzling white. This was a reflection of Jesus’ glory as God’s son.  Jesus was also affirmed by His Father heard as a voice from heaven. God acknowledged Jesus as His son whom He had chosen and urged the Apostles to listen to Him.

Moses and Elijah who appeared and spoke to Jesus represent the Old Testament Jewish Laws and Prophets.

This shows that the message of the Gospel which Jesus brought is not opposed to the Jewish faith but is a completion and fulfillment of that Faith.  In Jesus Christ God reveals Himself to us fully.

JUMAPILI TAREHE 5 FEBRUARI 2017

WAZO KUU: SIKU YA KUNG’AA KWA YESU.

Zaburi 50:1-12, 2 Korintho 3:12-18, Luka 9:28-36

Zaburi 50:1-12

7 Sikieni, enyi watu wangu, nami nitanena, Mimi nitakushuhudia, Israeli; Mimi ndimi niliye MUNGU, Mungu wako.

2 KORINTHO 3:12-18

12 Basi, kwa kuwa mna taraja la namna hii, twatumia ujasiri mwingi;
13 nasi si kama Musa alivyotia utaji juu ya uso wake, ili kwamba Waisraeli wasitazame sana mwisho wa ile iliyokuwa ikibatilika;
14 ila fikira zao zilitiwa uzito. Kwa maana hata leo hivi, wakati lisomwapo Agano la Kale, utaji uo huo wakaa; yaani, haikufunuliwa kwamba huondolewa katika Kristo;

30 Na tazama, watu wawili walikuwa wakizungumza naye, nao ni Musa na Eliya;
